ShareTweetWhatsAppVietnam has traditionally been one of the hottest poker hubs of Asia and the year has already witnessed several big tournament series taking place in the country. For Indians, Vietnam has been popular as like always, the 2018 World Poker Tour (WPT) Vietnam opened at Vietnam’s popular Pro Poker Club with a good number of Indian players in the mix.

Several Indian players could be seen discussing their travel plans to Ho Chi Minh City for this latest stop on social media and the excitement has already begun with Team India taking to the events with panache!

Headlining the Indian participation is Sumit Sapra, who has sailed through a field of 137 entries to enter the final table of the Welcome Event. With 215,000 in chips, Sapra is holding the fifth-biggest stack among the nine final table contenders who will resume action today. Kunal Patni and Dhaval Mudgal were the other Indian challengers at the event, but they both dropped out short of the money.

The second event that kicked off on the inaugural day was the Charity Event and Trần Kim Đông took the event down after reaching a heads-up deal with ĐỗHuy Cường.

Meanwhile, the first satellite to the WPT Vietnam Main Event that features a VND 8 Billion guarantee was also hosted on September 26.

Overall the 2018 WPT Vietnam is slated to play out 14 events and is scheduled for conclusion on October 4.

In today’s lineup are the two opening flights of WPT Ho Chi Minh Cup that features a VND 5,500,000 (~US$238) buy-in and allows one entry per flight, and the second satellite to the WPT Vietnam Main Event, even as the Welcome Event will play down to the winner. The Main Event will kick off on September 28.

Welcome Event

The 2018 WPT Vietnam opened with a bang and stealing the show on the inaugural day was the Welcome Event that featured a buy-in of VND7,700,000 (~$333). The excitement was in the air as 112 players registered to enter. 25 of them re-entered, taking the total entry field to 137.

A day’s play later, the field has narrowed down to the final table and the nine finalists will resume play to compete for the title and top prize of VND 2,60,000,000.

Some of the most seasoned players from the Asian circuit were seen in the field. Team India is likely to come out in good numbers with a number of top pros already in attendance. On September 25, Gaurav Gala in his social media post mentioned that he was traveling to Ho Chi Minh City, with Zarvan Tumboli and Romit Advani for the series.

Team India’s campaign in Vietnam is off to a flying start with Sumit Sapra (215,000) making it to the final table in the opening event. Sapra has an above-average stack but currently stands fifth among the nine finalists and has some catching up to do.
